67. The Beginning of the Busy Season

It has been a couple weeks since a garden blog. It is the busy time of year of prepping and planting all my crops plus we went on vacation for a week to rest up before all the craziness set in. Our average last frost date has passed so now it’s a game of watching the weather before I plant out my warm season crops. Let’s start off with updates of what’s been going on then we’ll discuss what I have planned to get done soon.

First let’s start with the fact that I got my tomatoes all potted up and they are doing so well! It is almost time to plant them outside (we have another cold snap the next couple of days). They could stand to be potted up again but if I am that close to planting them outside, my dilemma is do I really go through doing all that just to put them outside soon? I think some of the more developed ones will get potted up and I will use that potting soil to enrich the planting hole when the time comes.

Next let’s talk about my snapdragon plugs. I told you a couple weeks ago that I ordered plug trays for snapdragons. I got them all planted and some of them are pinched. They are growing and loving where they are planted in my new in ground space. Speaking of the in ground garden, it is all ready for planting finally. The last finishing touch to be added is straw to the walking paths then it will be ready for planting which should be happening soon.

My potatoes have exploded with growth. After struggling last year with my seed potato order and having to plant a month late, it’s been a nice change this year. I have already hilled them once and I’m sure I will be doing it again soon.

Last update this week is on animals! We got some olive egger chicks recently plus my family has been hatching some as well. Since we lost a couple over the past year, we are trying to plan for some extra hens as a just in case. I am really excited to see what the eggs from the olive egger chicks look like! We also got two more piglets to round out our pig growing operation this year. We have 9 to raise and split amongst friends and family. We as a family have really come to love raising the pigs so I believe this will be something we do from now on or at least for awhile.

Until Next Time, Happy Gardening!
