65. More Spring Planting and Freezes

We are approaching the time of year where a lot of plants start being delivered to my house in one form or another. It always makes for fun mail days when that time comes. It is also the time of year where I really have to watch the weather close. We are approaching our average last frost date so I have to make sure that the coast is clear before I plant out my frost tender things. Let’s talk about the progress I’ve been making recently in the garden.

First up since we’ve been talking about frosts, we have had some freezes recently that I felt like I needed to cover my crops for. Luckily not too many things needed to be covered since I haven’t planted out anything that can’t handle some cold. So far everything has come through the freezes fine and it looks like we are through with them now. We should be starting to warm up now and believe me, I am ready for it.

Last week I got more crops in the ground. I was able to plant my potatoes one day and I felt like this year I actually got the right amount for my garden space. I am excited to see how they grow and compare to other year’s harvests. I also got my bare root strawberries in my greenstalk. I hope they all start to take off and grow soon. These will be for fresh eating for my family and I will still go to a local source for making jams and freezing some. I was able to also plant strawberry plants at my community garden this week. I hope they bless someone that comes to check on the garden soon.

We were able to go get another load of compost recently. We have been going and getting one scoop at a time and slowly adding it to the raised beds and garden space as needed. One of my goals is to slowly just start adding it to all my beds to prep for my summer planting. Speaking of summer planting, it is almost time for me to pot up my tomato and pepper seedlings into bigger pots so they can really start to put on a lot of growth. I also got my first delivery of dahlia tubers. I have quickly been able to see that ordering dahlia tubers can easily become an addiction. There are so many different flower types and colors to choose from. I also ordered my first set of flower plugs. I have heard that this is an easier way to grow some flowers so you don’t have to spend so much time and energy seed starting. It’s something I want to experiment with for later on.

Last update is also a reminder to any of you who have chickens. Spring is a great time to do a cleanout of your chicken coop and add new shavings. I plan to get this done soon and use the shavings in my compost. I use a deep litter method in my coop especially in the winter time to help hold heat. With the weather warming up now it’s time to clean all that out and start fresh with new stuff.

Until Next Time, Happy Gardening!
